What’s Happening in JK “A” & SK “B” with Mrs. Koegler and Mrs. Macpherson
We continue to “keep on trucking” in Kindergarten with our Transportation Study. Lots of great traveling happening at our newly established “Train Station”. The children are having great fun playing the role of the conductor or ticket master as they board the “train” for their journey. They are learning the art of “retelling” with the story, The Little Engine That Could. The new Math Tub activities cover all the Math Strands using various vehicles for the manipulatives. The “Kinder Roll” kit has introduced the opportunity for them to explore how objects can move quickly or more easily…the importance of the wheel. We look forward to building our own vehicles for the “Soapbox Derby” coming up soon. Remember to send a covered shoebox to school.

News from Ms. Persuad’s SK “A” Class
In April we will be focusing on: Easter, spring and the life cycles of seeds. The students have been working very hard to read 500 books as a class. So far we have read 308 books and are closing in on our goal of an ice cream party. We have also been focusing on writing books. The homework books have been a great success and the students have been writing about their favourite activities in their journals. We have been working with money and estimation in math.

What’s New in Grade 1 with Mrs. Bruce
The grade ones wrapped up their energy unit using various means to control heat, light, and sound. They experimented with light reflection using mirrors, made shadow plays, and made sun pictures with the help of the sun. They cooled themselves off on Beach Day with the fans they made, and tried out varieties of instruments (man-made and real). They have experienced all four seasons in grade one now and are consolidating their learning by researching the Four Seasons using computer programs and reading many seasonal stories. They are becoming more familiar with the various temperatures found in each season and had fun using thermometers last week to check the puddles and sandbox outside. In Math the class has explored objects found in the environment and completed their study of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. This unit will be assessed for the term three report card as it was only partly completed in term two. This week, the children will study writing and telling time to the hour and half-hour and then complete the study of measurement by exploring capacity and mass. We are looking forward to studying The Local Community and to the various visits by friends and parents as we study the jobs of Community Helpers. Thank you for your response to my note regarding the next Show and Tell topic. It is certain to be interesting for all.

News from Mrs. Harvey’s Grade 2 class
As we bid winter goodbye, it is wonderful to see the academic progress your children have made over the past few months. With the warm days of Spring, the children are full of energy and ready for new and interesting challenges. In Social Studies, we will be investigating the flags of countries around the world. We already have three flags to examine and learn about the symbols and colours used on these flags. If you have a flag at home either, full size or smaller, we would appreciate a chance to borrow it. In math we will be starting a measurement unit on Money and this will be followed with Addition with Regrouping. Please work with your child at home to practice telling time to the quarter hour.

What’s Happening in the grade 2/3 class with Mrs. Whitmore
Both grades are busy in Math looking at money – adding and subtracting sums and making change. This is a great opportunity for parents to work with their child at home on making change and adding up purchases. Grade 3 students have planted their bean seeds and are anxiously waiting for and recording the results of their plant’s growth. Gr. 2 students are investigating Solids and Liquids in Science. Students in both grades are learning about writing friendly and persuasive letters and continuing to work on editing their written work.

News from Mrs. Hutchinson’s Grade 3 Classroom
March Break has come and gone and we are now looking forward to the spring season and some new units. The children have begun a language program called, “Read All About It.” They will spend approximately 15 minutes a day, three times a week, watching a video program and then we will have a discussion about the events and characters in that particular episode. The students will be learning new vocabulary, developing their listening and observation skills and investigating a variety of media techniques used in the program. The boys and girls will continue to read books of their choice during their silent reading block and then will record their books on a class chart. In Math, the children are continuing their study of multiplication. They are also reviewing the value of coins, practicing making change up to $50 and continuing to develop their problem solving skills. In Science, the students are investigating properties of plants and soils. They have each planted their own “Secret Fortune” plant and should be recording their observations every 3 days.

What’s new in Grade 4 with Mrs. Ligas
This month our class is learning about Canada. The students will be completing a variety of mapping activities, including locating and labeling the provinces, territories, rivers and physical regions. They will also be completing a research project in class on the province of their choice. In math we are exploring 3-D solids in geometry. We are making solids from nets and identifying the number of faces, edges and vertices on each. We will also be measuring the capacity of containers using milliliters and litres. In language we are continuing to read short stories together, during shared reading times and many books about Canada. Our written assignments are focusing on spicing up our sentences by varying the beginnings and making them sound smooth & flowing.

News from Mr. Siertsema’s Grade 4/5 Class
In April, we will continue our integrated approach to Novel Study, analyzing complex issues and studying writing techniques found in each of the three novels. We will look at sentence fluency, in order to better represent emotion in writing. Social Studies will carry on as the grade 4 students study the regions of Canada, and the grade 5 students study the different levels and varieties of governments. In the end, all of their hard work will translate into a co-operative assignment in which we will hold mock elections to demonstrate their immense combined knowledge of Canada. In Math, we persist with more difficult applications of multiplication and division, as we move into measuring area and volume. On behalf of the staff and students of Central Park, I would like to thank the student council for contributing funds to purchase a new digital camera for the school. It is very much appreciated and will go a long way in preserving wonderful memories from Central park School. In intramural action, basketball will continue in April, finishing at the end of the month. The teamwork and development of each player has been fantastic. The Boys Book Club will wrap up in April with a small celebration in the library during the second nutrition break on April 24th. It has been my pleasure to see inspiration develop as each student embraced writing in the creation of their comic books. I hope to see all of you next year, when the book club changes its focus with exciting new ideas.

What’s Happening in Grade 5 with Mrs. Simpson & Mr. Smith
Students are all working on novel studies, and are completing a study of energy by making and presenting a device or experiment about energy. This term we will study and compare several ancient civilizations including Egyptian, Roman, Aztec and Inca. In addition, one group of students has prepared an edition of a school newspaper which will be available in classrooms. Another group has worked on some background research and organization for the Decades project, in which different classes will collect and display pictures and items from a different decade of Central Park’s lifetime. Still other students have been working on background information for the June presentation for the Artsaround programme.

Junior French – Mrs. Simpson
All three junior classes have recently begun work on another French play, called “Comment y Aller”? They will work on paper work associated with the play, as well as learning parts and presenting the play in a group.

What’s Happening in Primary Physical Education and Health-Miss Downes
In Health, the students will be studying Physical Growth and Development.  They will be looking at identify the stages in development of humans and other living things (e.g., comparing physical changes from birth to childhood). In Physical Education, the students in Grades 1 through 3 will be continuing with their manipulation skill development via a modified Basketball unit. They will also be building up to the big “Jump Rope for Heart” event as part of their daily program.  A Grade One and Two “Skipping Club” will be offered by Mrs. Bruce and assisted by myself, Miss Downes.  This club will meet during various Nutritional Breaks. As soon as the fields assist us, we will be heading outside to enjoy outdoor fun with endurance building activities.

OTHER NEWS FROM CENTRAL PARK SCHOOL

Central Park’s Decade Project
One plan for Central Park’s closing celebrations is to have each class in the school research, collect and display pictures and related memorabilia for one of the decades of Central Park’s history. We are looking for items under the headings of; fashion, music, transportation, technology, world history, games and changes at Central Park. Some grade 5 students have set up a chart for each decade and are willing to help younger students with their research. We would also welcome ideas from parents and grandparents to help fill in the Decades study. Please contact the office or your child’s teacher if you have photos or items to lend us.

Toonies for Autism
We are participating in Toonies for Autism to help students, parents, staff and our community learn more about autism. Our goal in collecting toonies is to support autism research in Canada. On Tuesday, April 24th we will sell freezies at lunch to raise money. Friday, April 27th we will be donating our pizza money.

Your child’s brain works, just differently than yours!!
Parents want and need to be the primary educators of their children. Talking with and setting appropriate limits for your preteen/teen requires knowledge about how she/he thinks and this includes how the brain develops and works at various stages in your child’s growth. The City of Hamilton Sexual Health Network welcomes parents and caregivers to a free workshop by Garfield Gini-Newman, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Education. Come out and learn what the latest research is telling us on how the brain continues developing throughout the teen years.
