By Hamilton Community Foundation

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada will address Hamilton students at a celebration of ABACUS, a Hamilton Community Foundation initiative to increase post-secondary access, on April 20, 2016 at Cathy Wever School, 160 Wentworth Street North.

The Governor General will arrive at Cathy Wever at 9:30 and be greeted by student ambassadors, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Chair Todd White and Terry Cooke, president and CEO of Hamilton Community Foundation.

His Excellency will speak to some 400 guests in the school gymnasium, including 200 middle-school aged students from Cathy Wever and St. Ann (Hamilton), two of the schools from which ABACUS draws participants.  The audience will include local agencies delivering ABACUS programming and ABACUS founding donors. The Governor General will address the students, following which they will have an opportunity to ask him questions.

His Excellency has spent most of his career in higher education as a professor and later, administrator of several of Canada’s leading universities. His mandate has focused on strengthening learning and innovation, philanthropy and volunteerism, and families and children.

Focusing on the middle-school years, ABACUS aims to improve the academic, community and environmental factors that most directly affect a student’s likelihood of continuing his or her education. This collaborative initiative is made possible by the Hamilton Community Foundation and The Fairmount Foundation.

This event is open to media and will be live streamed on Periscope through Hamilton Community Foundation’s Twitter account @HamCommFdn
