A decade of champions; Westdale earns 10th straight championship

The Westdale Warriors earned their 10th straight girls water polo championship on April 19 besting the Saltfleet Storm 6-1.

The Warriors have dominated senior girls water polo over the last decade and the 2015-16 season they proved they were worthy of the accolade.  Westdale went 8-0 in regular season play amassing a league leading 51 goals giving up only eight.

Taylor Barker was the game’s top scorer posting three goals in the win for Westdale while Liv Magnien netted two.  Katie Agar added the other goal.  Saltfleet’s lone goal came from Elizabeth Isbister.

Despite the loss Saltfleet walked away with a feather in their cap, earning the school’s first ever medal in water polo (boys or girls). It was also Saltfleet’s first ever appearance in the gold medal game.

The Waterdown Warriors earned the girls senior bronze medal grabbing a 6-0 victory over the Westmount Wildcats.  Holding a 1-0 lead after the first quarter, the Warriors blew the game open striking for three goals.  Sarah Fox and Rachel Haunton each notched three goals in the game.

In the junior championship the No. 1 seeded Ancaster Royals edged No. 3 Westdale Warriors 3-2 to claim the school’s first junior girl’s water polo title since 2005-06.  Holly Connor led the way for the Royals netting two goals including the game winner in the third quarter.  Sophia Barrow added the other goal in the win.  Westdale’s two goals came from Sidney Jessome.

The junior bronze medal match saw Orchard Park knock off Dundas Valley 5-2.  Emma Shaw notched a hat-trick in the win with Phallon Melmer adding the other two for the Patriots.  Dundas Valley’s scorers were Julia Sylvester and Evelyn Brown.
