Westdale Hosts Trivia Night to Support Refugees

Westdale4Syria Trivia Night was Thursday, Feb. 11.

Westdale Secondary School hosted a big crowd on Thursday, February 11, for a team trivia night benefiting Syrian refugees.

Led by quizmasters Jeff Mahoney and Anne Bokma, the event invited teams of five or six to answer a range of questions – some of them submitted from celebrities using video messages.

Comedian Rick Mercer, Olympian Clara Hughes, Mayor Fred Eisenberger, musician Tom Wilson and many others sent celebrity video questions – and plenty of local businesses also supported the cause.

The night was a fundraising to help support Syrian refugee families coming to Hamilton, with funds going to Wesley Urban Ministries. Staff and students at Westdale worked closely together to organize the night, which had prizes for eight rounds of trivia as well as a silent auction. Prizes include donated tickets to see the Arkells, the Ticats and much more.

Student organizers, who recently spoke about the event with McMaster student radio station 93.3 CFMU, have been impressed with the outpouring of community support. It shows how eager people are to help, especially when it comes to making people feel welcome in Hamilton after a traumatic journey.
