Volleyball: Waterdown, Dundas Valley outlast opponents to claim girls volleyball titles
The Waterdown Warriors and Dundas Valley Gryphons walked away as city champions on Feb.22 claiming the senior and junior titles respectively at the 2016-17 Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board girls championship hosted at Waterdown District High School.
Waterdown claimed the senior title outlasting Westdale 3-2 in a five set thriller which was a back-and-forth marathon battle.
Waterdown fell in the opening set to Westdale 20-25, but rebounded with decisive 25-15 and 25-11 second and third set victories. They then lost the fourth match 19-25 to tee up a dramatic final set which Waterdown took 15-13 to secure their 10th championship title
The win also marked the first time Waterdown has won a senior girls volleyball title since 2010-11.
Waterdown and Westdale both advance to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) ‘AAA’ senior girls volleyball championship held Monday at Waterdown. Hamilton District Christian High (‘A’) and Glendale (‘AA’) will also represent Hamilton at SOSSA in their respective school categories. For more information visit www.sossa.on.ca.
In the junior girls game, Dundas Valley earned its first junior girls title edging host Waterdown 3-2 (13-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-13, 15-6).. Dundas Valley took the second, third and fifth sets to claim the victory.
Dundas Valley was the second ranked west seed with a 6-1 record with their only loss of the year coming at the hands of Waterdown back on December 15. The Gryphon’s only other appearance in the junior championship saw them defeated 3-0 by Westmount at the 2014-15 event.
