Trustees Request Ministry of Education Maintain Current Health Curriculum

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Trustees have voiced their desire to maintain the current Health and Physical Education curriculum this fall, through an approved motion at their Board Meeting on July 31, 2018.

“We have a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion that is foundational to our Strategic Directions,” said HWDSB Chair Todd White. “We strive to ensure that all students and staff can see themselves clearly embedded in the curriculum. We want them to be safe, welcomed, and feel that they are valued members of their school community.”

The motion approved by the Board of Trustees sees the following actions:

  • That Trustees write a letter to the ministry urging them to maintain the 2015 revised Health & Physical Education curriculum until the ministry has completed its consultation;
  • As well, Trustees urge staff to look for ways to ensure messaging (whether posters or otherwise), around our schools identifying HWDSB’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and safe school environments as it relates to omissions of topics covered in the 2015 document and missing from the 1998 curriculum; and
  • Trustees ask that staff ensure supports and resources are made available to teachers to support the needs of students as they arise.
