Rousseau Hour of Code

By ROB FAULKNER

What language does a computer speak? What happens when I press this button? Will the computer understand what I just wrote?

Those were a few of the big questions as more than 50 schools across HWDSB continue to work away at Hour of Code – the one-hour introduction to computer science designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.

Classrooms are choosing a variety of ways to mark the international event between December 7 and 13. Schools register, select tutorials, share inspirational videos with classes, consider coding clubs and much more.

To take just one example, Principal John Gris explained that at Rousseau elementary on Dec. 8 classrooms welcomed guest speaker Shane Allen, who is studying video game development at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Allen helped lead students through coding activities with their teachers.
