HWDSB welcomed potential community partners Nov. 24 looking to share facilities to benefit our students and the community.

The community meeting in the Education Centre heard a variety of proposals for sharing space in schools, related to athletics, learning and culture.

“This was a good opportunity to start conversations,” said Ellen Warling, Manager of Planning, Accommodation and Rentals. “There are two types of partnerships we envision – co-builds in the case of new schools or renovations, and partnerships that seek to use empty school space.”

Four presenters shared information on their needs and potential facility partnerships.

  • Heat Athletics expressed interest in a Sir Allan MacNab outdoor track & field facility partnership.
  • The Children’s International Learning Centre expressed interest in two teaching spaces, storage and office space for the organization.
  • The Afghan Association of Hamilton expressed interest in permanent space for the organization in central Hamilton.
  • Sport Hamilton expressed interest in an indoor multi-sport facility proposal and partnership opportunity.

About 20 interested visitors attended the meeting, in addition to the four presenters. They came from a cross-section of the local community, including youth organizations, medical organizations and more.

Across the province, school boards have entered into successful co-builds and facility partnerships with community agencies. The Ministry of Education is encouraging school boards to build on this success using facility partnerships that support student achievement. Partnerships operate on a cost-recovery basis.
