HWDSB High School Graduation Rate Continues to Rise

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s five-year high school graduation rate has increased to 78 per cent, new Ministry of Education data shows.

The graduation rate is calculated by tracking a single cohort of students who began Grade 9 in 2010-11 to learn what happened to them.

For this 2010-11 cohort, the graduation rate after five years was 78 per cent, up from 77 per cent for the 2009-10 cohort. The four-year rate was 70 per cent, up from 68 per cent for the 2009-10 cohort.

“We are thrilled that more students are graduating thanks to the dedicated efforts of our staff and students,” said Director of Education Manny Figueiredo. “We need these gains to continue so that all students graduate and have a bright post-secondary future. However, we are committed to continuous improvement because each 1 per cent increase means we are improving the life chances of approximately 35 students. This is the ultimate goal of public education.”

Many students stay in high school past their fifth year to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Figueiredo said the latest data is even more encouraging for HWDSB when it highlights the students who started with us in Grade 9 and finished with us in Grade 12. The graduation rate for students who stayed with HWDSB was 80 per cent, up from 79 per cent in the 2009-10 cohort.

Ontario’s five-year high school graduation rate rose to 85.5 per cent in 2015, up from 84.3 per cent in 2014.
