HWDSB Expands Innovative Transforming Learning Everywhere Initiative

Tablets coming to all Grade 9 students across HWDSB in 2016-17

HWDSB Logo RGB WebHWDSB is expanding its innovative project Transforming Learning Everywhere (TLE) so that all Grade 9 students receive tablets that will accelerate their learning and prepare them for a technological future.

TLE’s vision is to create a culture of engaged students and staff by focusing on instructional practices in classrooms, accelerated by digital tools. The goal is to improve problem solving, critical literacy, higher-order thinking, as well as knowledge and skills required in the 21st century.

“Boards across Ontario are interested in HWDSB’s work to prepare students for a digital age,” said Director of Education Manny Figueiredo. “Our focus continues to emphasize the importance of instruction and the equitable access to digital tools across our schools.”

HWDSB Trustees endorsed a recent TLE report that outlines actions taken as well as how the project will be implemented in year three (2016-17) and beyond. The five-year implementation plan encompasses details on learning approaches; professional development; technical supports; and the tools and infrastructure that make the project possible.

In 2015-16, tablets were used on a one-to-one basis for grades 4-8 at seven North Cluster schools, Grade 6 at Glen Brae, Grade 9 at Delta and Sir John A. Macdonald and for all students at Henderson and Mountain. Classroom sets were used for all schools in grades 4 and 5.

In 2016-17, the system rollout of tablet technology continues. In addition to the 2015-16 use, one-to-one tablets will expand to include all Grade 9 and special classes across HWDSB, Grade 7 at Glen Brae and Grade 10 at Delta and Sir John A. Macdonald. Use of teacher and classroom sets of tablets will expand to include all Grade 6 classes.

Staff anticipate that deployment of tablets will occur before December, that all iPads will have standardized software and device-management tools, and that classrooms will increasingly use mobile devices and projectors instead of computer labs.

Full implementation will see one-to-one tablet technology for all students in grades 4 to 12 by September 2019.
