Athletics Update: HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic set for Thursday
HAMILTON (December 6, 2017) – The top girls’ high school basketball players within in the Hamilton public school board will take centre stage on Thursday night as it hosts the second annual HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic game.
Tipoff for the event is at 7:00pm at Glendale Secondary School with the game featuring 26 of the best senior girls basketball players within the HWIAC league.
As part of the game, the school board along with McMaster University and Mohawk College, have once again teamed up to help deliver this year’s event. Both McMaster and Mohawk will have student-athletes from their varsity program act as “Head Coaches” for the two teams.
Team Mohawk will be coached by HWDSB alumni and current Mohawk women’s basketball players: Stef Hrymak, (Westdale), Shanien O’Neill & Jasmina Kucic (the former Highland), and Emilee Champigny (Sir Winston Churchill).
Hrymak is in her firth year playing with the Mountaineers while O’Neill is in her 4th. Already this season Hrymak claimed Athlete of the Week honours with O’Neill earning a selection as All-Star at the Georgian Tournament. Kucic is in her second year at Mohawk while Champigny is a rookie with the squad.
For Team McMaster they will be led by Hilary Hanaka and Erin Burns who are both from the Hamilton area. Hanaka is in her fourth season with the Marauders averaging 17.6 points per game so far this year. Burns is also in her fourth year of eligibility at McMaster and the guard has appeared in nine games with the Marauders averaging 5.9 points per game.
