Ancaster High Welcomes 800 Participants at Dared-to-Tri Race

ancaster triA healthy crowd of 800 is gearing up to participate Friday, May 27 in the 17th annual Dared-to-Tri triathlon and duathlon organized by Ancaster High School student-leaders.

Organized and run by Ancaster High recreation and fitness leadership students, the event at the Jerseyville Road school will see students, staff and community members from across Hamilton try a fun triathlon or duathlon. It is the culminating task for students in PLF4M1 Recreation & Fitness Leadership.

“I’m very proud of the dedicated students organizing the day and thankful for the generous volunteers and partners who made it possible,” said Mike Schurer, AHS teacher and race director.

“This event represents their final assignment as it focuses on positive participation in lifelong sports and activities, personal leadership, organization, teamwork, large event planning, fundraising and giving to others, problem-solving, and developing school and community spirit.”

Dared-to-Tri began in 2000 with just 40 participants (the class plus 10 eager teachers). It has grown to the point that it requires 120 student and community volunteers, but has maintained its community links.

Over the years, the event has raised $25,000 to support recreation at Bennetto Elementary School. The PLF4M1 students visit Bennetto to present the donated funds for athletics, team uniforms, transportation costs to athletic events and breakfast programs for Bennetto students. They also celebrate the courage of Bennetto students for daring to try.

The event has also supported the Terry Fox Foundation, The Cut Cancer/ Bravery Beads Program at McMaster University and the Ancaster Fitness Fund Initiative.

Participants have included everyone from Grade 5 students to senior citizens. The event’s distances are: Triathlon: Swim 300 m (12 lengths), Bike 7 km and Run 3.7 km; and Duathlon: Run 1.5 km, Bike 7 km and Run 3.7 km.
