School Council

Hi All,

Parent/Caregiver Voice is important for our students, school, and community. Our School Council is the vehicle for your voice to be heard.  We have six meetings in one school year (every other month) for one hour, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Our present School Council Chair Gail Baglole and I invite you to add to our rich culture by coming out to the School Council Meetings.

Principal Pat Petruccelli

SCHOOL COUNCIL

WHO AND WHAT WE ARE

  • School councils have a legislated role at the school.
  • We are a group of parents/guardians who work along with the principal and teaching staff to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents/guardians.
  • Being active in your school council, one of the most effective and rewarding ways that parents/guardians can get involved in their children’s learning.
  • You will have the opportunity to voice your opinions on school issues and decisions on behalf of parents and community members in your school community.
  • Research shows that parental involvement is the most significant factor contributing to a child’s success in school. Their active participation in school activities improves student achievement, increases school attendance and decreases student dropout. Students succeed when parents have a positive attitude about the importance of a good education.

WHAT WE ARE NOT

  • School council is NOT primarily a fundraiser group. Although most fundraising occurs through school council, you do not have to be involved in the fundraising committee unless you WANT to be.
  • We are not alone. We work together with the principal, the staff and with the HWDSB to improve student achievement at Billy Green School.

HOW CAN YOU JOIN US?

  • Parents/guardians of a student enrolled at Billy Green School vote in an election and run for a position on School Council.
  • By running for a position, you are not committed to holding an executive position, but rather if elected to School Council, you will have voice and vote on many issues that School Council is a part of.
  • You can declare your interest in running for school council this Fall by completing a self-nomination ballot and returning it to the school.
  • Every year the elected School Council members will elect a chairperson from their parent/guardian members. The chairperson is responsible for facilitating meetings and representing the school council’s position on issues.  A vice-chairperson, secretary and treasurer are also elected from the membership.
  • You will be in you elected position on School Council until the elections are held the following school year – September – September.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • We have six meetings in one school year (every other month) for one hour, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
