Ancaster, Westmount claim boys volleyball championship titles

2017-18 Senior Boys Volleyball Champions: Ancaster RoyalsHAMILTON (November 13, 2017) – The Ancaster Royals topped the Hamilton District Christian Knights 3-0 to earn the Hamilton public secondary school senior boys championship on Monday at Sherwood Secondary School

Ancaster controlled play during most of the match never trailing a set. Set scores for the game were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20.

The championship is Ancaster’s 14th title in HWIAC play and first since 2014-15.

The Royals now advances to SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) “AAA” championship held next week at Sir Winston Churchill in St. Catharines, Ont. For Hamilton District, their season is not yet over with a challenge match set for tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4:40 pm against Guido de Bres Christian with the Knights hosting. That game will determine the Zone 1 representative for SOSSA at the “A” level.

2017-18 Junior Boys Volleyball Champions: Westmount WildcatsIn the junior championship, the Westmount Wildcats roared back after a 2-0 deficit to win their ninth junior boy’s volleyball title 3-2 over the Westdale Warriors

Westdale edged out Westmount with 25-22 and 26-24 in the opening two sets.  After that, Westmount turned the tables using decisive 25-11 start their comeback rally.  That followed with a 26-24 victory and a 15-12 final set for the championship win.

The win is the first junior boy’s title for Westmount since 2008-09.

Westmount advances to SOSSA Junior “AA” championship contested at Sir Winston Churchill in St. Catharines, Ont on Wednesday, November 22nd. Hamilton District Christian and Sir Winston Churchill will square off tomorrow in a Junior “A” challenge match for the right to represent Zone 1 at SOSSA in the junior boys “A” championship.  That event also goes on November 22 at Dunnville High in Dunnville, Ont.

This year’s HWIAC boys volleyball championship was hosted at Sherwood Secondary School.
