OFSAA BOUND: Hamilton public schools head to provincial championships

HAMILTON (May 31, 2017) – Hamilton public schools are set for provincial glory this week with a number of local secondary schools and individual athletes slated to battle at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association) championships across the province.

Here is a breakdown of the upcoming events involving local Hamilton public & HWIAC students:

Boys AAA Rugby (June 1-3 in Ottawa) – Saltfleet DHS
Saltfleet rolls into the nation’s capital looking to repeat as provincial champions. They are ranked No. 1 in the event and will also be aiming to claim their third provincial title in the school’s history. Their previous titles came in 2015 and 2005. https://ofsaa.on.ca/boys-aaa-rugby

Boys AAA Soccer (June 1-3 in Hamilton) – Waterdown DHS
Waterdown DHS will represent HWDSB as Cardinal Newman hosts the boys’ soccer championship. Waterdown will open the event against Kitchener’s Cameron Heights at Cardinal Newman at 10:30am on Thursday then taking on Bolton’s St. Michael at 1:30pm at St. Jean de Brebeuf. On Friday Waterdown will face Kingston’s Holy Cross (8:00am) and Windsor’s Holy Names (12:30pm). https://www.ofsaa.on.ca/boys-aaa-soccer

Boys A Soccer (June 1-3 in Windsor) – Guido de Bres CHS
Guido is playing in pool B of the event and kicks off the event playing St. Benedict (Sudbury) on Thursday at 8:30am. At 11:30am they will play MacKenzie Community School from Deep River, Ont. Friday sees Guido battle Burlington’s Lester B. Pearson as well as Timiskaming District SS. https://www.ofsaa.on.ca/boys-soccer

Girls A Soccer (May 31-June 2 in Toronto) – Hamilton District Christian High
This event is already underway and HDCH is set to play the University of Toronto Schools (12:30pm) today along with Toronto Christian (3:30pm). Tomorrow the Knights will duel against Sudbury’s Macdonald Cartier (8:00am) and Toronto’s Ursula Franklin 12:30 in pool play. https://ofsaa.on.ca/girls-soccer

Track & Field (June 1-3 in Belleville) https://ofsaa.on.ca/track-field
As one of the largest track & field meets in North America gets set to kick off, a number of Hamilton based athletes will be ready to break personal bests or OFSAA provincial records. A breakdown of student-athletes participating this year from HWDSB.

COMPLETED EVENTS
Girls AAA Rugby (May 29 -May 31 in Durham Region) – Saltfleet DHS
Saltfleet was impressive on their run to OFSAA earning a challenge win over Westdale to qualify for SOSSA. The Storm defeated Niagara Lakeshore Catholic 28-5 to advance to OFSAA in the Durham Region. Ranked ninth, Saltfleet defeated IE Weldon Secondary (Kawartha Lakes) 45-5 on Monday. In their second match played Tuesday, the Storm drew No. 1 Oakville Trafalgar and concluded their trip to OFSAA losing 55-5 to the top-ranked squad from Oakville. https://ofsaa.on.ca/girls-aaa-rugby
