Orchard Park lifts first senior boys water polo title while Westdale claims junior boys

2016-17 Senior Boys Water Polo Championship
HAMILTON (January 19, 2017) – The Orchard Park Patriots captured their first ever Hamilton-Wentworth public high school senior boys water polo championship on Thursday while Westdale Westdale picked up another junior title.

Orchard Park knocked off three-time defending champion Westdale in the senior title match with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Warriors.

Westdale held a 2-1 lead after the first period but Orchard Park tied the game in the second period and netted two goals in the third period to propel them to the win.

Jordan Fraser-Trotta scored twice in the game while teammates Connor Holman, Subhan Malik and John Novakovic also scored for Orchard Park. Westdale scores included Brian Anderson and Harrison McCann.

Heading into the game, Westdale was ranked as the No 1 seed (after round robin play) while Orchard Park was the third seed.

The senior bronze medal was awarded to Dundas Valley as they edged Delta 6-5 in a thrilling back and forth game. James Crowe powered the Gryphons offence with a hat trick with teammate Eric Justason adding two goals. Kyle Crow got the other goal which opened the scoring in for Dundas Valley in the first period.

Delta’s Derek Reimann countered with three goals while Nick Wolf had two in the loss.

2016-17 Junior Boys Water Polo Championship
In the junior championship the No. 1 seeded Westdale Warriors knocked off the No. 3 Westmount Wildcats 5-2 to claim the school’s fifth junior boy’s water polo title in seven seasons. Dima Ignjatovic and Jack Shanlin led the way for the Warriors scoring two goals apiece while Michael Forrester added the other goal.

Westmount’s Thomas Simonovic notched two goals in the loss.

The junior boys bronze medal game saw Ancaster defeat Sir John A. Macdonald 6-2. Macdonald, who were playing their inaugural season this year, held a 1-0 lead over the Royals in the first two periods before Ancaster pulled away with four goals in the third.

Ancaster’s Thomas Walters and Weston Farnworth each scored twice in the victory while Sam Mills and Sebastian Birks each added a goal apiece. For Sir John A. Macdonald, Thomas Traheim and Joshua Seager were the scorers.
