Team Mohawk earns bragging rights at HWDSB girls basketball All-Star classic game

HAMILTON (November 21, 2016) – In the inaugural HWDSB girls basketball All-Star Classic game which featured 28 of the city’s top student-athletes from the Hamilton public school board, Team Mohawk topped Team McMaster 77-69 at Glendale Secondary School on Monday night.

Westdale’s Taylor Marof was the game’s top scorer posting 19 points in the win for Team Mohawk while Guido de Bres’ Jamee Vanderwoude had 15 points.  Marof was named Team Mohawk’s most valuable player.

Team Mohawk held the advantage all night earning a 16-13 lead after the first quarter and then building to an eight point 38-30 lead at the half.  They maintained the eight point lead the rest of the way with a 58-50 lead at the third quarter break and a final score of 77-69.

For Team McMaster Westdale’s Kyra Cummings was the top scorer registering 16 points.  Orchard Park’s Alexis Skirrow tallied 13 while Sir Winston Churchill’s Emiliee Champigny had 10 points.  Sherwood’s Alannah Yates was named Team McMaster’s most valuable player.

In the three point shooting contest, Sir John A. Macdonald’s Ruby Espinoza was declared the winner.

This year’s game set the stage for future HWDSB All-Star games which saw the school board team up with Mohawk College and McMaster University in helping present the game.  Both post-secondary institutions provided varsity student-athletes to help coach the games with their head coaches on hand to present awards post game.
