HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic set for Monday

HAMILTON (November 20, 2016) – The top girls’ high school basketball players within in the Hamilton public school board will take centre stage on Monday night as it hosts the first annual HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic game.

Tipoff for the event is at 6:00pm at Glendale Secondary School with the game featuring 28 of the best senior girls basketball players within the HWIAC league.

As part of the game the school board along with McMaster University and Mohawk College have teamed up to help deliver this year’s event.  Both McMaster and Mohawk will have student-athletes from their varsity program act as “Head Coaches” for the two teams.

Team McMaster will be lead by Rachel Holmes and Clare Kenney. Holmes, who is an Ancaster High School alumni and currently a fifth year senior with the Marauders, will coach her younger sister Jess Holmes who will represent Ancaster at the game. Kenney is also a fifth year senior who plays forward with the Marauders and is currently averaging 13.7 points per game.

For Team Mohawk, the players will be coached by Careena & Carissa Brown who are both graduates of Westdale Secondary School and members of the Mohawk basketball team.. Joining the Brown sisters on the bench will be teammates, Jakyala Douse, who earned a OCAA Championship All-Star nod last year, along with second year player Hunter Johns.

“We are excited to showcase the talents of our students and honour them for their tremendous seasons,” said Jamie Nunn, Superintendent responsible for HWDSB Athletics. “Glendale’s Phys-Ed’s staff led by Tish Jeffery, have done an excellent job in launching this event and ensuring a special evening for the best players in our league.”
