Westmount, Sir John A. Macdonald land on top in division-II basketball championship

HAMILTON (November 14, 2016) – The Westmount Wildcats and the Sir John A. Macdonald Chiefs secured the Hamilton public school board Division-II Girls Basketball Championship on Monday at Orchard Park Secondary School.

In the senior girls division-II championship, Westmount knocked off Orchard Park 40-38 to collect their first senior girls basketball title since 1972.

Hannah Hammon led the way for Westmount posting 14 points in the win while teammates Erin Kaptyn and Paige Hamilton contributed 10 and nine points respectively.

Orchard Park’s Natasha Centurione had a game high 17 points in the loss. Teammates Alana Holman posted eight points and Stephanie Horobetz had six.

In the junior girls division-II championship, Sir John A. Macdonald Chiefs upset George P. Vanier 47-38 earning the school’s first junior girls basketball crown.

Heading into today’s game Vanier was ranked as the top seed holding a perfect 8-0 record which included a 44-33 win over Sir John A. Macdonald back on October 26. For their part, Sir John A. Macdonald was the second seeded team in the league with their only blemish coming in the head to head match-up against Vanier.

This was just Sir John A. Macdonald’s second appearance in the championship game having lost last year to the Sherwood Saints in their only other appearance.

Next week some of these student-athletes who competed tonight will be featured in the first annual HWDSB Girls Basketball All-Star Classic. Hosted by Glendale Secondary on November 21st, the All-Star game will feature top players from across Hamilton public school board and they will be coached by Master University and Mohawk College varsity student-athletes. Tipoff for that game goes at 6:00pm.
