Sherwood edges Saltfleet 1-0 for field hockey crown

2016-17 Girls Field Hockey ChampionshipHAMILTON (October 20, 2016) – The Sherwood Saints knocked off the Saltfleet Storm 1-0 to capture the Hamilton public school board Division-I field hockey championship on Thursday afternoon at McMaster University.

Sherwood’s Haley McComb notched the game’s only goal to lead the Saints while Shannon McMaster was credited with the shutout in goal.

The win was sweet revenge for Sherwood who lost a 1-0 overtime heartbreaker to Saltfleet last year. Sherwood has now hoisted the Division-I trophy eight times and it is their first title since 2011-12.

Sherwood topped Westmount 1-0 to advance to the final while Saltfleet upset second place Westdale 2-0 in their semifinal match.

In the Division-II championship, Ancaster High School defeated Glendale Secondary 1-0 to capture their second straight title. The Royals lone goal came from Emma Beaulne while Sarah Brown and Safa Khan split goaltending duties to earn the shutout.

Ancaster defeated Nora Frances Henderson Secondary 4-0 to advance to the final while Glendale used a 1-0 win over Delta on Monday to qualify for the championship game.

Next up, Sherwood and Saltfleet move on to the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) championship set for Wednesday (Oct. 26) at McMaster. Both teams are vying to qualify for the OFSAA provincial championship held November 3-5 in Waterloo, Ont.
