OFSAA Update: Six medals at track; bronze for HDCH in soccer

A recap of HWDSB/HWIAC teams competing for spring provincial championships at OFSAA. Championships are being held across the province from June 2-4, 2016.

Track & Field: Various Schools (June 2-4 @ Windsor, Ont.)

HWDSB student-athlete capture six medals while Dundas Valley Secondary School earns the overall senior girls title as OFSAA Track & Field Championship wraps at the University of Windsor on Saturday.

Dundas Valley tallied 33 points at the three-day championship meet to claim the overall senior girls title which also propelled them to an 8th place overall finish in the girls rankings.

Brittany Stenekes led the way for the Gryphons striking gold in the senior girls long jump event. She jumped to a distance of 5.83 metres for top position while Kiera Christie-Galloway of St. Matthews (Orleans) was the silver medalist jumping 5.69. In a twist, Stenekes was the silver medalist in the 100 metre hurdles yesterday while Christie-Galloway was the gold medalist.

Senior Jenna Smith grabbed a bronze medal for the Gryphons in the 200 metre dash, racing to a time of 24.08 seconds. She was just off the mark of Ashlan Best from Guelph’s Centennial CVI who crossed in 23.83 for gold.

Joining the Dundas Valley medal parade on Saturday was Alec Purnell who took the top place on the podium in the junior boys 800 metre run. He crossed in one minute and 58.86 seconds. His closest competitor EL Crossley’s (Pelham, Ont) Brock Deba who took silver at 1:59.28.

Westdale’s Myles Misner Daley followed up his golden moment in the midget boys 100 metre dash yesterday striking gold in the midget boys 200 metre dash on Saturday. He crossed with a time of 22.37 while Dante Henrique of Delhi District Secondary was second at 23.02 in the 200 metre event.

Other top results from Saturday included Chloe Hewit of Westdale taking seventh place in the girls 800 metre run while Alex Seguin of Waterdown was 16th in the junior boys 3000 metre race. Conrad Von Pallske finished 12th in the junior boys javelin throw.

Overall HWDSB student-athletes collected six medals at the three day track & field meet with four being gold medals.

Brittany Stenekes (Dundas Valley SS): gold – senior girls long jump; silver – senior girls 100m hurdles
Jenna Smith (Dundas Valley SS): bronze – senior girls 200m dash
Myles Misner Daley (Westdale SS): gold – midget boys 100m dash; gold – midget boys 200m dash
Alec Purnell (Dundas Valley): gold – junior boys 800m run

Girls Soccer (A): Hamilton District Christian High (June 2-4 @ North Bay, Ont)

Hamilton District Christian High (HDCH) earned a bronze medal eat the girls ‘A’ soccer championship on Saturday edging Sudbury’s St. Benedict 3-2. The Knights had a tremendous OFSAA run posting a perfect 4-0 record in pool play and earned a quarterfinal win on Friday to head to the semifinals. Their only blemish was in that semifinal game which was a 4-0 loss to Welland’s Jean Vanier who ended up winning the ‘A’ championship.
