OFSAA Update (Day 2)

A recap of HWDSB/HWIAC teams competing for spring provincial championships at OFSAA. Championships are being held across the province from June 2-4, 2016.

Track & FIeld: Various Schools (June 2-4 @ Windsor, Ont.)
HWDSB athletes picked up two medals during the second day of OFSAA Track & Field hosted at the University of Windsor. Westdale’s Myles Misener Daely was the golden athlete of the day winning the midget boys 100 metre dash with a time of 10.96 seconds. His closest competitor was Ben Robinson of Immaculata HS (Ottawa) who crossed second at 11.21.

Brittany Stenekes of Dundas Valley Secondary also brought home a medal earning silver in the senior girls 100 metre hurdles, racing to a time of 13.90 seconds. She was just .33 seconds behind Kiera Christie-Galloway from St. Matthews (Orleans, Ont.) who took the gold.

Stenekes was just one of several Dundas Valley athletes who posted top results in the second day of competition. The Gryphons saw Alec Purnell finish fifth in the junior boys 400 metre dash while Jenna Smith finished fifth in the girls senior 400m dash. The Dundas Valley senior 4×100 metre relay team made up of Smith and Stenekes along with Sidney Turpin and Georgia Temush placed fourth just under a second behind W.F. Herman from Windsor who took gold.

In the field, Jessica Hill posted a top-10 finish for Dundas Valley in the midget girls shot put event.

After two days of competition the Gryphons are in second place in the overall senior girls team standings with 17 points. They trail Ajax’s Notre Dame who have tallied 21 points.

Other top results from HWDSB schools included Nick Dalessandro of Nora Frances Henderson notching a 10th place finish in the senior boys 1500m race while Briana Wice of Saltfleet was 11th in the girls senior javelin throw.

Girls Soccer (A): Hamilton District Christian High (June 2-4 @ North Bay, Ont)
Hamilton District Christian High are in the hunt qualifying for the semifinals at the girls ‘A’ soccer championship in North Bay. The Knights finished first overall in Pool C collecting wins on Friday over Port Hope High School (1-0) and Rideau DHS (5-1) of Elgin, Ont. In their quarter-final match they edged The University of Toronto Schools 1-0 to advance to the semifinals set for Saturday. In that game, they will battle Welland’s Jean Vanier at 9:00am. Should they win they will play for gold at 3:00pm or bronze if they lose at 1:00pm.

Boys Soccer (AAA): Westdale SS (June 2-4 @ Kingston, Ont.)
Westdale finished pool play with a 1-2-1 record placing fourth in Pool B and missing out on the playoff round. On Friday morning the Warriors lost a tough match 3-2 to St. Basil (Toronto). Zac Collins and Gregory Gordon scored for Westdale in the loss. They finished their OFSAA trip by beating host Regiopolis-Notre Dame (Kingston) 2-0 with Marcus Emery and Gordon notching the game’s only goals. Gordon had an excellent OFSAA tournament scoring four times in four games.

Boys Soccer (AA): Glendale SS (June 2-4 @ Kingsville, Ont.)
The Glendale Bears posted a 0-1-1 record on Thursday to miss the playoff portion of the boys “AA” soccer championship. On Friday, the Bears were narrowly edged 1-0 by London’s St. Andre Bessette but followed that game with a hard fought scoreless draw versus St. Michael (Kemptville, Ont.) in their afternoon match. Overall Glendale finished with a 1-1-2 record notching five goals scored and three against. Their best game was a 4-1 win over Fort Frances High School during the opening day of play on Thursday.

Girls Soccer (AAA) : Westdale SS (June 2-4 @ Niagara Falls, Ont.)
Westdale split another two games in day two of competition at the girls ‘AAA’ soccer championship. They nabbed a impressive 3-0 win over Bradford DHS (Bradford, Ont.) in their morning match before narrowly falling 2-1 to Dumbarton HS (Pickering) in the afternoon. Overall the Warriors compiled a 2-2 record but that wasn’t enough to advance the team to quarterfinal action.

Boys Rugby (AAA): Saltfleet DHS (June 2-4 @ Markham Ont.)
A repeat for the Saltfleet Storm is over as they lost a heartbreaker to St. John’s College from Brantford, Ont., 15-14. this morning in Markham, Ont. The Storm were aiming to defend last year’s OFSAA title but finished the event with a 1-1 record. They opened the championship with a 31-17 win over Senator O’Connor College School from Toronto on Thursday.
