Westdale’s Dave Walters earns 2016 Wismer Award

Dave_Walters-WismerCARLISLE, Ont. (May 31, 2016) – Westdale’s Dave Walters was named the Hamilton public school board recipient of the the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence on Tuesday evening at Carlisle Golf & Country Club.

Walters is a twenty year coaching veteran having mentored student-athletes in football, waterpolo and powerlifting. He has an impressive resume which includes guiding his school to 13 city football championships, seven water polo titles and seven provincial powerlifting championships over the course of his career.

Most recently Walters coached his team to the 2015 OFSAA Northern Bowl Championship which is the first time a Hamilton public school has earned this honour.

In his own right, Walters is also an accomplished athlete having been a provincial and national powerlifting master five times.

The Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is given annually to a coach who has made a significant contribution to the Hamilton high school coaching scene both in the community and through their involvement with student-athletes. This year’s awards ceremony was the 13th edition of the event.

The Wismer Award was established in memory of John Wismer who was a respected, passionate educator and coach with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board for 33 three years.

Waterdown’s John Warrick and Ancaster’s Lu Angel were also finalists for the public school board award.

Anthony Macaluso from Cardinal Newman was named the Catholic school board recipient.

Dave Walters Most Memorable Coaching Moment:
“My first senior championship in 2006 was very memorable and now our OFSAA Northern Bowl Championship game are among the best.

However, my favourite moments are when I see a face that I haven’t seen for a while or when alumni stop by the school and I get a chance to hear how they are doing. They usually bring up a good memory that I can share with current players.

Sometimes those moments make me happy, but often those moments motivate me. I look back at the good things we have done over the years and I want to make sure we continue them, or I look at the mistakes we have made and want to make sure we don’t repeat them.”
