WATERPOLO: Westdale claims both junior and senior titles

2015-16 Senior Boys Water Polo Champions (Westdale Warriors)

HAMILTON (January 14, 2015) – The Westdale Warriors captured their third straight Hamilton-Wentworth public high school senior boys water polo championship on Thursday topping the Waterdown Warriors 7-3 at Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool.

It also marked the 20th time that the Warriors had hoisted the senior boys title with play dating back to the 1933-34 season.

Westdale’s Ian MacKinnon led the offensive charge for the Warriors notching a hat-trick in the game with all three of his goals coming in the second quarter. Andrew Leber had two goals in the game while Connor Crowe and Ross Vender rounded out the scorers for Westdale.

MacKinnon, Leber and Crowe also scored in the last year’s championship game for the Warriors..

Adam Gillies scored all three goals in the loss for Waterdown.

The senior bronze medal was awarded to Dundas Valley as they edged Westmount 7-6 in overtime. Noah Birthelmer powered the Gryphons with five goals including the game winning overtime marker. Michael Wooflson and Kyle Crowe also scored in the win while Westmount’s Emerson Page tallied a hat-trick in defeat.

2015-16 Junior Boys Water Polo Champions – Westdale Warriors

In the junior championship the No. 1 seeded Westdale Warriors knocked off the Ancaster Royals 5-1 to claim the school’s fourth junior boy’s water polo title in six seasons. Alex Nevils led the way for the Warriors notching four goals in the game while teammate William Neil added another. Michael Walters notched the single score for Ancaster.

The junior boys bronze medal game saw the Westmount Wildcats topple the Waterdown Warriors 9-1. Westmount’s Jack Corr and Brendan Armstrong each notched a hat-trick with Armstrong scoring the game winner in the opening quarter. Tyler Robinson had two goals while Thomas Simonovic added one.

Hayden Stam was the lone scorer for the Warriors in the loss
