BASKETBALL: Westdale, Saltfleet claim perfect seasons in girls basketball

2015-16 Senior Girls Basketball Division-I Champions – Westdale Warriors

HAMILTON (November 12, 2015) – The Westdale Warriors and Saltfleet Storm capped their perfect season claiming taking home the senior and junior division-I championships on Thursday night at McMaster University.

In the senior girls championship, Westdale knocked off Waterdown 48-34 to win their fifth title in six seasons. Westdale was led by Alexis Kenyeres who poured in a game high 20 points.  Teammate Mia Spadafora also broke 10 points tallying 13 in the win.

Waterdown’s top player was Kathleen Howcroft who scored 12 points.  

Westdale got out to a quick start earning a 16-6 advantage in the opening quarter and opened up a 31-15 first half lead to cruise to the championship title.  

Both teams advance to the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) championship held next Thursday at Waterdown District High School.

Saltfleet Storm

In the junior girls division-I championship, Saltfleet earned their perfect season by besting Dundas Valley 32-24.  

The Storm spread around its offensive attack with Kaillie Hall leading the way with 10 points.  Melissa Tougher posted eight points while Kate McPhail scored seven.   

Olivia Mathews was the top scorer for Dundas Valley posting nine points in the loss.  

The win was Saltfleet’s first in junior girls basketball in 10 seasons with their last championship coming in 2005-2006.

Guido de Bres Gryphons

In Division II championship action, Guido de Bres took home the senior crown winning 33-21 over Hamilton District Christian High.  Jaymee Vanderwoude was the game’s top player scoring 17 points in the win for Guido.  Lindsay Bosveld was the Knights top scorer with 12.  It was the fifth time Guido has captured the senior girls division-II title.

The Sherwood Saints walked away as junior girls division-II champions upsetting the Sir John A. MacDonald Chiefs 42-35 in the opening game of the quadruple header at McMaster.

Amber Hewit led the charge for the Saints scoring 22 points in the win while team mate Beth Evink tallied nine.

Sherwood had a 20-12 first half lead, but the Chiefs offence rallied in the third and fourth quarter to put the game within striking distance.  McDonald would pour in 23 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Sherwood managed to hang on for the win.

Heading into today’s championship, the Chiefs were undefeated and ranked as the No. 1 seed.
