Saltfleet, Ancaster earn field hockey gold

22312556358_97b5561f96_kHAMILTON (October 22, 2015) – Saltfleet District High School collected its third straight HWIAC girls field hockey championship on Thursday afternoon at McMaster University.

The Storm narrowly edged the Sherwood Saints defending their Division-I title in a shootout 2-1.  

The two teams played to a scoreless draw after regulation and a single overtime frame.  During play, Sherwood had the best opportunities to score late on three different scoring opportunities which were thwarted by the Saltfleet defenders.

Next up for Saltfleet is a trip the SOSSA championship which is slated for next Wednesday (Oct. 28) in St. Catharines, Ont.  The Storm are hoping to advance to their third straight OFSAA championship.  Last year at the provincial championship, the Storm finished in fourth place after losing 2-1 (in flicks) in a heartbreaking semifinal against eventual silver medalist Bluevale CI (Waterloo, Ont.).

In the Division-II championship the Ancaster Royals defeated the Nora Frances Henderson Huskies 3-2 in a dramatic game that came down to the final minutes.  

Ancaster was led by Katelyn Kennedy who tallied a hat-trick in the game. While Kirsten Dryden and Ashley Baranowskii notched the goals in the loss for the Huskies.
