OFSAA T&F: Dundas Valley student-athletes lead the way at provincial championship

TORONTO (June 7, 2015) – Dundas Valley Secondary School and had an impressive showing at the 2015 OFSAA Track & Field Championship held over the weekend at the University of Toronto.

Overall Dundas Valley managed to score four medals while Justin Jongsma from Hamilton’s Guido de Bres was the lone athlete competing from a HWIAC secondary school to strike gold at the provincial championship.

Jongsma scored the gold medal in junior boys high jump with a height of 1.90-metres just ahead of Anthony Donnet of Queen Elizabeth CVI (Kingston) who finished at 1.85-metres.

Dundas Valley was led by Alec Purnell who captured two medals in his first ever OFSAA track & field championship. Purnell captured second place in the midget boys 800-metre race finishing just behind Mitchell LeLiever of St. Marcellinus (Mississauga). He also captured bronze in the midget boys’ 400-metre dash.

Jenna Smith scored a bronze in the senior girls 400-metre for Dundas Valley finishing with a time of 54.69. Kyra Constantine of St. Roch CSS (Brampton) was first at 53.65 while Ebhani Blackwood of Bill Crothers SS (Unionville) was second at 54.59.

Gryphons’ Brittany Stenekes earned a silver medal in senior girls long-jump hitting 5.64-metres while Jamilah James took gold with a 5.73-metre jump. Stenekes nearly took home the bronze placing fourth in the senior girls 100-metre hurdles finishing just four one-hundredths of a second behind Erin Hodge of Innisdale SS (Barrie).

Dundas also finished with a fifth place finish in the senior girls 4×400 metre event. The team of Smith, Stenekes, Ryann Johnston and Fin Adams finished with a time of 3:55.48, just two second off the gold medal pace put in by Birchmount Park SS (Scarbrough)

Other top results involving Hamilton public secondary schools included: Christian Janzen (Westmount SS)- 4th in the junior boys discus throw; Madison Johnston (Ancaster HS) 12th in the midget girls 1,500 metre; Monica Binotto (Ancaster HS) 7th in the senior girls 400 metre; Chloe Hewitt (Westdale SS) 7th in the senior girls 800 metre;
