OFSAA Update – Day Two

A look back on day two of OFSAA basketball, volleyball, and hockey championships involving HWDSB and HWIAC member teams:

Boys Basketball (AAAA)
Sir Allan MacNab positioned itself for a run at the Consolation Championship on day two of the OFSAA championship. In their first game on Tuesday MacNab was matched up against cinderella Holy Names HS (Windsor) losing 71-62. Holy Names as the 16th seed has already knocked No. 6 seed Eastern Commerce HS (Toronto) in their opening game. MacNab’s afternoon saw them rebound with a strong performance knocking off St. Anne CHS (Lakeshore, Ont.) with a big 84-65 win. Shaviante Gilgeaus led the way for the Lions pouring in 19 points while Justin Andrew had 18 in the win. MacNab will play tomorrow in the consolation semifinal against London’s H.B Beal with the game tipping off at 9:00am. They hope to return to the consolation final which they won last year. Boys Basketball (AAA)
Saltfleet remains undefeated in tournament play and has the best shot of any HWDSB team to return home as an OFSAA champion headed into the final day of play. The Storm are set to play No. 3 West Humber CI (Etobicoke) in the championship semifinal set for 11:30am tomorrow.  Should they win that game, they will play gold medal match at 7:00pm. If they lose they will play for bronze at 5:00pm. Earlier today, the Storm knocked off No. 15 OD/Park SS (Orillia) 65-46 in the second round followed by a spirited 48-44 effort to edge St. Patrick (Ottawa). Top scorers against St. Patrick were Darnell Curtin & Nicola Djogo with 10 points each. Boys Basketball (A)
Hamilton District Christian High secured its place in the consolation semifinal on Tuesday with a convincing 67-43 win over Englehart HS (Englehart, Ont.). The Knights poured on the points throughout the game jumping to a 30 point lead by the third quarter before seeing the score settle at the final tally. No. 10 seeded HDCH will battle No. 11 St. Lawrence SS (Cornwall) in the consolation semifinal tomorrow at 10:00am. [Tournament Website]

Girls Hockey (AAA/AAAA)
Both Saltfleet and Waterdown were eliminated from the OFSAA championship after pool play concluded on Tuesday. Saltfleet split Tuesday’s games finishing in third place in Pool C with a 2-2 record; they were just two points shy from qualifying for a playoff position. The Storm were defeated 7-2 by St. Theresa HS (Midland) in the first game on Tuesday and then they edged Bill Crothers SS (Markham) 4-3 in their final contest. Waterdown registered a 0-0 tie against Bishop Tonnos CHS (Hamilton) in its morning game and then lost 4-0 against Fr. Leo J. Austin CSS (Whitby) in the afternoon on Tuesday.. [Tournament Website]

Volleyball (AAAA)
Westdale wrapped up their trip to the OFSAA championship losing another tough match – this time to Bill Crothers SS (Markham) 2-1 (25-27, 25-13, 8-25) . The Warriors will return to Hamilton while play continues tomorrow with the semifinal and championship matches. [Tournament Website]

Volleyball (A)
No. 5 Hamilton District Christian High made a valiant effort but ultimately fell in their quarter-final match against No. 4 ranked Woodland Christian HS (Breslau). The Knights finished second in Pool C after losing 2-1 in heartbreaking match to St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Kenora). Set scores were 26-24, 21-25, 13-15. In the championship quarter-final HDCH fought hard but eventually lost 3-1 (21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 17-25) to Woodland. Lots of single-A volleyball action is still left to be played with HDCH the event and the semifinals and championship set for Wednesday.
