BASKETBALL: Saltfleet storms to overtime victory for Division-I Senior Boys Championship

HAMILTON (February 23, 2015) – The Saltfleet Storm captured the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Division-I Senior Boys Championship with a thrilling 74-66 come-from-behind overtime victory over Sir Allan MacNab at McMaster University on Monday.

Saltfleet was powered by Darnell Curtin who poured in 20 points in the spirited victory which saw the Storm down by 18 points after the first quarter. Woods Brown also earned 19 points for Saltfleet while Nick Pett added 12 in the win.

After the opening quarter which saw Saltfleet down 22-4, the Storm refused to lose putting up a respectable 16-7 second quarter to set the score at 29-20. They kept pace in the third and used 19 points in the fourth to finally pull even with Sir Allan MacNab at 62.

Saltfleet never led the game in regulation and waited until the first few minutes of overtime to take the lead for good. Once the lead was in hand they poured on the the points to finish at 74-66.

This was Saltfleet’s second senior boys title and their first since 2003-04.

Sam Jenkins was the top scorer for the Sir Allan MacNab Lions dropping 19 points in the loss. Teammate Shai Alexander had 14 while Justin Andrews had 13 points.

Saltfleet and MacNab both advance to the Southern Ontario Secondary Association (SOSSA) championship with Saltfleet representing Hamilton at the AAA level and looking to defend their OFSAA title from last season. MacNab will compete in the AAAA SOSSA championship.

Earlier, in the junior boys Division-I final, MacNab would continue its dominance earning its fifth straight with a 77-59 decision over Saltfleet. Matthew Grace was the games top scorer dropping 19 points in the junior win for the Lions.

Grace was one of five players who hit double digit scoring in the game for MacNab. Isaiah Bujdoso finished with 15 points while Kevaughn Ellis posted 13 and Tre Edwards and CJ Falconer each had 12.

Ihsan Khan was Saltfleet’s top player posting 15 points in the loss while teammate James Agyapong had 11.

In Division-II play, Delta topped Waterdown 45-25 in the senior championship with the brother combo of Blake and Austin Turner leading the Delta Red Raiders with 14 points each. Also breaking into double digits for the Red Raiders was Jake Wojzciuk who tallied 11 in the win. Waterdown’s Trey Gardner was the games leading scorer putting up 20 in the loss for the Warriors.

Sir Winston Churchill cruised to a 66-31 win over Hamilton District Christian High. Joey Crouse was the game’s top scorer leading the Bulldogs with 17 points in the win. Thaw Tee Tun posted 13 points while Adrian Watson had 12 points for Churchill. Isaiah Huisman was the top scorer for the Knights notching 12 in the loss.

Both Delta and HDCH will represent Hamilton at SOSSA in their respective divsiions. Delta will play in the AA event while HDCH will contend in the A championship. All SOSSA events will be played later this week (Feb 25-26) at various locations.
