VOLLEYBALL (JR/SR): Westdale claims senior championship; Westmount wins junior

HAMILTON (February 19, 2015) – The Westdale Warriors captured the 2014-15 Hamilton Wentworth District School Board senior girls championship on Thursday night winning 3-1 over the Sherwood Saints.

Westdale powered past Sherwood with 25-14 and 25-17 point victories in the opening two sets. In the third set, Westdale would falter 23-25 with Sherwood pulling out all the stops to remain in the game. The final set finished with Westdale earning a 25-14 victory for the championship.

It marked the first time the Warriors had captured a senior girl’s championship since the 2001-02 season. It also was the school’s fourth overall having also won city championships in 1978-79 and 1979-80. Westdale’s last championship appearance came back in 2013-14 when they lost to George P Vanier 3-1.

Westdale (AAAA), Sherwood (AAA) along with Sir Allan MacNab (AA) and Hamilton District Christian High (A) will represent Hamilton at the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championships held next week. (For more information visit www.sossa.on.ca)

In the junior girl’s game, Westmount SS defeated Dundas Valley in straight sets to claim the school’s sixth junior girl’s title.

The first set was the toughest for Westmount as Dundas Valley kept pace with the Wildcats putting the final score at 28-26.
In set two, the Wildcats came out in top after scoring key points on several long rallies to earn a 25-18 set victory. With the momentum in their favour, Westmount finished the game 25-14 for the win.

The Wildcats finished their season with a regular season record of 5-1 and made their way to the final with 3-0 wins against Westdale SS (semifinals) and Sherwood SS (quarter-final).

Westmount’s last junior girl’s volleyball title came back in 2010-11 while they also won championships in 2009-10, 2003-04, 1991-92 and their first in 1983-84.
