HOCKEY: Saltfleet stuns Sherwood with late goal to win Division-I boys hockey

Saltfleet DHS - 2014-15 Boys Division-I Champions

Saltfleet DHS – 2014-15 Boys Division-I Champions

HAMILTON (February 19, 2015) – Ryan Murdoch scored the championship winning goal with just 3.6 remaining in the game to hand Saltfleet District High School their second straight Hamilton public secondary school Division-I Boys hockey title on Thursday at the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.

With everyone convinced the game was headed to overtime, Murdoch scored an unassisted goal on a scorched shot from just inside the blue line to clinch the championship beating Sherwood SS 2-1.

Saltfleet opened the games scoring in the first period when Ty McCullough accepted a pass from Cole Chaisson to put the Storm up 1-0. Sherwood would respond just over a minute later when Captain Kevin McClelland scored what would turn out to be the Saints only goal of the game.

Today’s game was a déjà vu feeling for both teams as Saltfleet came out ahead last year with a 2-1 victory over Sherwood in the championship final. This marks just the second time Saltfleet has won the championship in four appearances.

Saltfleet is on a roll in hockey this week having claimed the Division-I girls title on Tuesday.

Up next, Saltfleet advances to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) semifinal game held Feb 25 at Seymour Hannah Sports Complex in St. Catharines, Ont. The Storm will contend against St. Catharines’ Sir Winston Churchill SS with the puck dropping at 9:00am. If they win that game they will play in the SOSSA Championship slated for 2:00pm.
