Westdale captures 2014-15 senior boys waterpolo championship
HAMILTON (January 15, 2015) – The Westdale Warriors repeated as Hamilton Wentworth public high school senior boys waterpolo champions on Thursday defeating the Ancaster Royals 6-2 at Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool.
The win capped a perfect season for the Warriors who went ]8-0 in league play and then won their semifinal against Dundas Valley SS on Tuesday. This marked the second straight season Westdale has hoisted the championship trophy.
Connor Crowe led the offensive attack for the Warriors notching two goals in the win. Ian MacKinnon, Andrew Leber, Max Margetts and Luke Gadsdon also scored for Westdale. Ancaster’s offensive push came from Kieran Mortimer and Jack Mills.
The championship game was knotted up at 1-1 before Crowe and Leber scored consecutive goals to put the Warriors up 3-1 headed into halftime. From there they controlled play and cruised to the victory over the Royals.
The senior bronze medal was awarded to Waterdown DHS who beat Dundas Valley SS 7-1. Waterdown’s top scorer was Jack Miller who posted two goals. Other scorers for Waterdown included Zach MacLellan, Eoin Blythe, Mike Steeves and Joel Parry.
In the junior championship the No. 1 seeded Westmount Wildcats toppled the No. 2 seed Orchard Park Patriots 8-1 to claim the school’s first junior boys waterpolo championship since the 2008-09 season. Emerson Page led the way for Westmount notching four goals in the game while teammate Sebastian Krawchenko posted three goals in the win.
The junior boys bronze medal game saw Westdale edge Ancaster 3-2. Westdale was propelled by two goals coming from Samual Mulholland Zofcin. Mulholland Zin notched goals in the second and third quarter while Jacob Flaherty scored the other for the Warriors. Ancaster’s John Pronek notched two goals in the loss for the Royals.
