Principal Update – Dec 8

This has been an exciting week at Ancaster Meadow. It started on Monday with our Senior Boys’ Volleyball team winning the City Championship. Mr. Trikoupis and the students spent countless hours practicing and their hard work has paid off – Congratulations!

The week ended with the annual Home & School Holiday Bazaar. Thank you to our Home & School Association and all the volunteers who ran the Holiday Bazaar. There was a ton of energy around the school today. It was a wonderful event and a lot of fun.

This week I had the pleasure to be in classrooms observing students exploring problem solving through coding as part of the Hour of Code event. I also got to watch the awesome performance of  Rudolph by 6A. There are great activities happening in our classrooms everyday and these are only some examples.

We have our Kindergarten Holiday Assembly on the morning of Fri Dec 15. The Holiday Assembly for all grades will be Thurs Dec 21. There will be a dance for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 on the afternoon of Fri Dec 22.

Students in grades 2-8 will be going to Ancaster High’s presentation of Beauty and the Beast on Fri Dec 15.

I would like to provide an update to parents about some issues related to our building facilities. Our exterior lights have been repaired and are being upgraded to LEDs. These lights are brighter than the current bulbs and are also more energy efficient. The timer settings on the exterior lights have also be adjusted to have the lights stay on over night. With our Facilities Department, I have participated in a review of our current exterior lighting and some upgrades are being planned to help with building security. There are several other issues related to building security that were brought forward at our last School Council meeting. As I continue to work through this issues I will be reporting back in my weekly updates.

At the School Council meeting on Thurs Jan 18th, our Hamilton Police School Liaison, Officer Drozdz, will be presenting to parents on social media safety. This topic is always of interest and I encourage all to attend.

With the cold weather settling in, it is important for all families to be aware of the HWDSB policy on Inclement weather https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Weather-Cancellation-Infographic-1.pdf If buses are cancelled due to weather than all schools are closed for the day. Please pay attention to the HWDSB website and local media for morning announcements.

The HWDSB Social Work department is hosting Cool Little Kids® An Anxiety Prevention Program: Working with Parents to support young children who are shy, withdrawn, and anxious.  A parent information night will be January 16, 2018 from 6:30 pm-7:30pm at the HWDSB Education Centre.

Have a great weekend,

Simon Goodacre, Principal
