Update on Roof Leak – March 5

Thank you for your patience as we continue to address the roof leak at Ancaster High. The health and safety of our staff and students continues to be our priority.

Here is our latest update:

The Ministry of Labour visited Ancaster High School on February 16 in response to concerns regarding exposure to asbestos from the leaking roof. At the time of the visit, no contraventions were observed and they did not raise additional concerns.

Public Health Services is also aware of the situation and has consulted with Occupational Health & Safety staff at the HWDSB. At this time Public Health Services is satisfied that the HWDSB is addressing the situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cause of the roof leak?

Ancaster High experienced leaks in its roof due to its age and current condition. The leak was caused by ice/snow accumulation and recent heavy rains.

What is being done to repair the roof in the short-term?

School staff immediately contacted staff in the Facilities Department. HWDSB staff and contractors came to the school to assess the issue. Upon investigation, it has been found that there is no risk to students while in this section of the school.

Contractors have already started the repairs. We are hoping the majority of the concerns will be addressed by the repairs over the weekend (February 16-19) until the permanent full replacement can be completed this summer.

When will the roof be permanently replaced?

It is expected the roof will be replaced this summer.

How is the Board addressing concerns about asbestos?

HWDSB takes matters of health and safety very seriously including matters related to asbestos. The Board has an Asbestos Management Plan and follows provincial regulations to the highest standards.

On February 16, the Ministry of Labour visited Ancaster High School in response to concerns regarding exposure to asbestos from the leaking roof. At the time of the visit, no contraventions were observed and they did not raise additional concerns. Impacted classrooms were closed as a precaution but are reopening when approved to do so.

More information will be shared at a public information session on Febv. 27, 2018.

The water from the roof is discoloured. Why?

As water passes through the roof components such as tar and felt paper, the result can be water discolouration. There is no immediate health risk. HWDSB has been consulting with Public Health and there are no concerns with exposure.

What is the Board doing to address mould?

As we wait for the repairs to be completed, HWDSB staff have conducted a mould assessment and found no issues. Staff continue to inspect daily to ensure no mould growth occurs. Another assessment will be conducted after the repairs are made.

Where can I direct my concerns?
