School Effectiveness – A.M. Cunningham School  continues to implement a culture of Caring and Safe Schools with particular focus on a Safe and Orderly Environment, Time On Task and Opportunity To Learn as well as Positive Home School Connections.

Principal Awards – Each month, Teachers select 2-5 students who have displayed outstanding skills in the teacher selected areas to receive a Principal Award.  This is documented with a certificate, the students has their picture taken to be displayed in the showcase in the front foyer.

Parental Involvement – A. M. Cunningham School offers many opportunities for parental involvement ranging from classroom volunteers, participation in Home Reading programs, to involvement in School Council.  Parent involvement results in many activities such as Milk Programme, Pizza Lunches,  and charitable causes like “Coins For Kids”,  and Terry Fox Run.  Fundraising activities are held to make purchases that enhance the learning environment for all students.

EQAO Standards – Staff and administration are committed to ensuring programming and assessment match EQAO standards, as well as HWDSB targets. “Teacher Moderation”, a collaborative marking process, based on Ministry standards has been embraced by staff.
Developmental Reading Assessment / GB + – Students at all grade levels participate in a standardized reading assessment, at key points during the year, that assesses each child’s reading ability and comprehension level.  Programming is then developed to meet areas of need, ensuring student progress.
Learning Resource – Opportunities are given for students who have areas of need to receive some additional support.  In order to supplement the literacy and numeracy instruction given in the classroom, some students through a Tiered Intervention model receive support using the Class Act kit, Levelled Literacy Intervention, Empower reading program, PALS reading and Math groups using Scholastic’s Do The Math kits.  These programs are in addition to regular classroom programming.

Music and Drama Programming – A specialized music and drama teacher provides indepth programming for our students.

Physical Education and FitnessWe are very fortunate to have specialized Physical Education Teachers who follow the OPHEA guidelines in teaching our students Physical Education.  We also have a dedicated teacher who provides fitness instruction throughout the school. –
HWDSB Strings Program – Students at A.M. Cunningham have the opportunity to begin violin lessons at Grade 4.  Students participate in a weekly group lesson from a qualified strings teacher and perform at various concerts throughout the year.
