Special Hearings to Committee of the Whole – HWDSB Accommodation Reviews

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is holding accommodation reviews across the community. An accommodation review takes into account school space, programming and possible school closures. A report by an Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) and a report by staff are either complete or nearing completion for each area review.

Before Trustees make a decision that may include a school closure, HWDSB will hold a SPECIAL HEARING to receive public input on the recommendations. Individuals, groups or organizations wishing to speak at this SPECIAL HEARING must pre-register by contacting Heather Miller at heather.miller@hwdsb.on.ca or 905-527-5092 ext. 2279.

About Delegations to Special Hearings to Committee of the Whole

Feedback from the community is an important part of the accommodation review process. Trustees welcome delegations to hear feedback on the various accommodation options.

Definition of a delegation for the purpose of Accommodation Review Committees

Delegations consist of individuals, or representatives of groups or organizations, who request an opportunity to draw the attention of the Board of Trustees to a particular matter or issue as it relates to an accommodation review.

Pre-meeting procedures

  • Trustees welcome all delegations.
  • All delegations must register by noon on the day of the meeting through the Director of Education, John Malloy, and directed to Heather Miller by email at heather.miller@hwdsb.on.ca or phone at 905-527-5092, extension 2279.
  • Delegation requests will be referred to the Chair of the Board to be scheduled on the appropriate meeting date.
  • Delegations are not required to provide written submissions. However, those delegations wishing to make a presentation with written support materials or require audiovisual equipment must submit their materials to the Director of Education no later than three (3) business days prior to the meeting.
  • Delegations unable to attend are encouraged to make a written submission three (3) business days prior to the meeting.
  • Note: Any written material will appear as part of the trustees’ support material for the meeting where the presentation is made.

Process for delegations at the committee hearing

  • Delegations are expected to speak to the ARC or staff recommendation for the review area being addressed that evening.
  • Delegations may select to make a five (5) or 10-minute presentation.
  • A question period of up to five (5) minutes will follow the presentation, where trustees will limit their comments to questions for clarification from delegations.

Once the presentation has been heard, trustees may select one of the following options:

  • a) Receive the delegation, or
  • b) Refer specific items to staff for follow-up.
