Background Information
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Equity Policy provides the foundation for the development of Board policies. Under the supervision of John Forbeck, Superintendent of Staff & Community Engagement, the Equity Department coordinates the development of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s Equity Policy and the staff development related to policy implementation.
The Diversity and Equity Pillar Policy consists of the following components:
The Draft Equity Policy Supporting Guidelines: Gender Equity was developed by an Equity Policy Steering Committee consisting of representatives of Board employee groups and community stakeholder organizations.
Along with the Equity Policy Supporting Guidelines: Antiracism and Ethnocultural, Anticlassism and Socio-Economic Equity, Sexual Orientation, and the Draft Gender Equity, these guidelines are intended to assist the Board in ensuring that its activities are consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Ontario human Rights Code.
The Draft Equity Policy Supporting Guidelines: Gender Equity is also intended to:
- Make all HWDSB staff aware of gender, gender identity, and gender-related biases and their impact on educational achievement;
- Address issues related to Gender Equity through the Board;
- Identify and remove systemic barriers related to Gender Equity at HWDSB
- Enable staff and students to work and learn in environments that are free from discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender and gender identity.
