Transportation |
The Inuit had a variety of transportation for different types of terrain. Arctic terrain would make life difficult for the Inuit if they hadn't had means of transportation like the Kayak the Umiak the Kumatik, toboggans, snowshoes, and plank sleds. Kayaks and Umiaks are used in the summer. Kumatiks, snowshoes, toboggans, plank sleds are used in the winter. The Inuit had a variety of transportation for a variety of land types like ice, snow and water .Inuit transportation is made of wood, ivory, bone on the outside they are covered with skins of seal . Kayaks were the main form of inuit travel to get across water. Kayaks were used in the summer. They were very narrow and only one person could fit in the kayak. On the outer side of the kayak there were many seal skins for warmth. There was a tight hole at the top of the kayak so if capsized no water could enter the kayak. It had a double paddle and was highly manuverable. It was used by the men for great travel and a perfect hunting vehicles. Umiaks are used in the summer. They are very similar to the modern day canoe. They are very large and are covered with many seal skins to keep the passenger(s) warm . They could carry an entire family or a very, very big load. They are extremely long (35-40 feet) you may think this is very heavy but two men could carry this extremely long object. This particular means of transportation was only used by the women . The Kumatik is an adaption to the Siberian reindeer sled , this transportation type is used in the winter. It is made of a piece of driftwood across a piece of whale bone. It was light but very, very sturdy(strong).its runners were made of wood or ivory from walrus tusk; water or even blood was poured over the runners. This transportation method was unique and was pulled by dogs, instead of reindeer. |
