Walk, Wheel and Wear Yellow on October 4

walk wheel wear yellow dayHWDSB is calling on students, staff and community to search their closets for bright yellow shirts in support of International Walk (Wheel) to School Day on October 4.

All year, HWDSB promotes and encourages its communities to utilize active and sustainable transportation. On Wear Yellow Day or International Walk (Wheel) to School Day, HWDSB is challenging its communities to step up to the plate by wearing yellow and using active transportation on their trip to school. The awareness day works in support of Active and Sustainable School Transportation (ASST).

“Starting your day by walking or cycling to school is a great way to be energized for the rest of the school day,” said Sue Dunlop, Superintendent of Student Achievement.

HWDSB prioritizes ASST because it increases physical activity, reduces traffic congestion, improves air quality, enhances neighbourhood safety and instills a greater sense of community. The School Travel Planning (STP) model was created in conjunction with ASST by addressing systematic barriers regarding walking to school, and working to motivate communities to work together to assure students arrive safely.

Get your school walking, cycling, and rolling to school by registering at Smart Commute Hamilton’s website. Don’t forget to submit your two most creative photos from Wear Yellow Day to Kelly Scott at [email protected] for an opportunity to be featured on the website.
